Alumni Scholarship Extends Late AU Professor’s Legacy

Alumni Scholarship Extends Late AU Professor’s Legacy

The Tuarira Mtaita Scholarship Fund, established by Africa University alumni, supports high-performing students with financial need while honoring Mtaita’s legacy as an educator, mentor and friend.

After the sudden death of their beloved professor, Tuarira Mtaita, Africa University alumni created a scholarship in his name and raised enough money to support four students.

Mtaita died in March 2025 from injuries sustained in a car accident in Zimbabwe. He was serving on the Africa University faculty at the time. A horticulture expert from Tanzania, he served the university for more than 30 years and was the longtime chair of AU’s financial aid committee.

AU graduates launched an appeal to honor Mtaita through a direct scholarship. Alumni, co-workers, parents and friends in Africa, Europe and the United States responded with 62 gifts totaling just under $12,000 in five months. The average gift was $139.

The Tuarira Mtaita Direct Scholarship Fund at Africa University soon became a reality. More than 70 students applied, representing Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Four students received partial scholarships. Recipients were selected based on academic performance, financial need, leadership potential and country representation. The criteria also reflected Mtaita’s passion for education and student development.

Mtaita was known for his classroom brilliance, humility, warmth and generosity. He believed education extended beyond books and modeled discipline, service and preparation for life after Africa University.

His quiet kindness and steady presence supported students adjusting to new academic and cultural environments. His impact continues through the lives he touched and through each student the Mtaita Scholarship Fund supports.

“The Mtaita Scholarship reflects our collective commitment to honoring a legacy of academic excellence, service and mentorship,” said Caroline (Shoko) Mabande. “Through this initiative, we aim to extend opportunities to deserving students and sustain the impact of Mr. Mtaita’s lifelong dedication to education and service.”

Alumni often help define an institution’s strength and growth. The Mtaita Africa University Alumni Scholarship Committee has demonstrated that commitment. Its members are Sophia (Chiremba) Anong, Kalaba Chali, Caroline (Shoko) Mabande and Tsitsi Makombe.

The effort to honor Mtaita and extend his legacy continues. The committee is moving from immediate scholarship support to a long-term endowment in his name and invites others to support the work.
