A Gift of Connection and Well-Being

A Gift of Connection and Well-Being

“”In vibrant outdoor spaces, students experience the campus differently, sharing ideas, laughter, and moments of peace..””

Africa University students are enjoying beautiful outdoor spaces that enrich their campus life, thanks to the generous support of Highland Park United Methodist Church, HPUMC), in Dallas, TX.

These spaces are designed to bring students together, offering them a chance to relax, de-stress, and foster meaningful connections in the heart of their campus. Phase one involved the construction of a pergola that invites people into the open area between the Kwang Lim Chapel and the Highland Park Student Union. The installation of tables, benches and umbrellas now completes the space as an oasis for refreshing the mind, body and soul.

Beyond their physical function, the seating options allow students to step away from the rigor of academic life and immerse themselves in moments of reflection. Whether it’s a one-on-one discussion with a classmate, collaborative group work, or quiet solitude beneath the shade of a tree or umbrella, the space invites students to interact with their surroundings in fresh and restorative ways.

In a world where mental and physical well-being are paramount, areas like these are vital. They remind us of the importance of balancing hard work with moments of calm and connection. Stepping out of the lecture hall, laboratory or dormitory, and into vibrant outdoor spaces, students experience the campus differently, sharing ideas and laughter, and being present for and with each other.

For Africa University students, faculty and administrators alike, this HPUMC-funded project is a model for how thoughtful design and intentional giving can transform lives. HPUMC’s ongoing investment in campus infrastructure is shaping the holistic experience of Africa University students, creating an environment where they can thrive.
